Somewhere in there lies my name in Chinese, but I'm so ignorant I don't even know what Chinese language it is (Mandarin?), let alone which characters are mine. Life can be strange.

I believe that Mandarin and Cantonese use the same written system, but are spoken differently. I'm quite prepared to be contradicted on this, however.

Thanks :) As far as I can work out, you're exactly right – the spoken and written systems are different. Google says this is "Simplified Chinese".
I assume it must include some sort of phonetic system (like japanese katakana script) for spelling foreign names – although it's odd that my name was transliterated, but not that of the magazine.

I always understood 'Simplified Chinese' to be just the font, at least, as far as Windows is concerned. Perhaps not?

Wikipedia, which as we all know is infalible, says it's a complete character set:

I'd guess western versions of Windows only include one suitable font for these characters, so they named that Simplified Chinese?
